The Politics of Singing

This work examines the sociopolitical implications of the membership, musical and political performance, choral material, leadership, and member perceptions of the German Workers' Choral Association (Deutscher Arbeitersängerbund, or DAS) during the years of the Weimar Republic, 1918-1933. This organization of over 6,000 choruses and 500,000 members exemplified the broader movement for proletarian cultural advancement. Like other workers' organizations, including the sport and cycling groups, the DAS was closely linked with the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Free Trade Unions and explicitly aligned itself with the socialist working-class movement. Comparisons with its bourgeois rival, the German Choral Association, other workers' organizations, Communist and Nazi singers, and worker choruses in other nations, as well as case studies in Augsburg and Solingen, illuminate the development of the DAS. This work draws upon archival sources from Solingen, Bonn, Augsburg, Plauen, Feuchtwangen, and Dortmund to analyze the sociocultural and political milieu of the Weimar-era DAS and the organized working class as a whole.

From Interculturalism to Transculturalism
48,00 € *

Recent trends in postcolonial and intercultural studies have led to a marked development towards concepts of transculturalism and cosmopolitanism. The articles collected in this volume discuss how cultural and literary theories are related to these much-debated issues. Experts from Germany, Austria and Italy have collected their theoretical approaches to and case studies of pertinent literary texts in this volume. The invitation to join in the project was occasioned by the 70th birthday of Rüdiger Ahrens, himself a much-travelled scholar in this field, and extended to scholars with whom he has collaborated over many years. Contributors: Jochen Achilles (Würzburg), Heinz Antor (Köln), Lothar Bredella (Gießen), Daniela Carpi (Verona), Peter Freese (Paderborn), Paul Goetsch (Freiburg), Erhard Reckwitz (Duisburg-Essen), Carla Sassi (Verona), Norbert Schaffeld (Bremen), Hans Ulrich Seeber (Stuttgart), Franz Karl Stanzel (Graz), Klaus Stierstorfer (Münster), Laurenz Volkmann (Jena), Wolfgang Zach (Innsbruck), Waldemar Zacharasiewicz (Wien), Hubert Zapf (Augsburg)

Technology transfer-the process of sharing and disseminating knowledge, skills, scientific discoveries, production methods, and other innovations among universities, government agencies, private firms, and other institutions-is one of the major challenges of societies operating in the global economy. This volume offers state-of-the-art insights on the dynamics of technology transfer, emerging from the annual meeting of the Technology Transfer Society in 2011 in Augsburg, Germany. It showcases theoretical and empirical analyses from participants across the technology transfer spectrum, representing academic, educational, policymaking, and commercial perspectives. The volume features case studies of industries and institutions in Europe, the United States, and Australasia, explored through a variety of methodological approaches, and providing unique contributions to our understanding of how and why technology transfer is shaped and affected by different institutional settings, with implications for policy and business decision making.

Heading to Portugal with a heating unit in the trailer to heat up 500.000 liters of water for sharks might sound a bit crazy. To pass up a suitcase full of money sounds not the least logical and quitting a safe job to face an uncertain future sounds - to put it carefully - somewhat stupid. But precisely these crazy, illogical and barely thought-out things make a success story turn into exactly what this book is about. My name is Christian Chymyn. I haven't experienced this success story but had the privilege of re-living it. What do you do, when two people want to tell you their story, which you do not want to hear and in a city you don't want to be in? Normally turn around and drive home. But in my case it wasn't quite that simple. The city is Augsburg, the two people are Andreas and Helmut - and on the side, they are my employers. They took me with them - actually you could almost say forced me - to spend two days with them in the Swabian Metropolis. Today I can reveal: In the end I have reconciled with the city and heard stories which were worth writing down.

Analysis and Application of Dynamic Patterns wi...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,7, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to illustrate common situations within the context of complaint management and to provide solution concepts with focus on management decisions and actions. Therefore, we refer to a dynamic approach by applying so-called patterns, using System Dynamic (SD) in order to provide managers with a better understanding for common situations. Our target is to demonstrate how to build up an understanding for long-term or side effects that yet do not experience the necessary attention. In this case, we describe the situation itself, explain how responsible managers usually react (and why) and identify corresponding patterns. The reason why we decided to use patterns for this special purpose are the advantages that come along with their application. One the one hand, patterns enable us to identify existing mental models and decision structures. Thus, this knowledge makes it possible to develop actions that can be used to fasten and improve decision-making. On the other hand, we are able to analyze risks and failure options. This helps us to devise actions that ensure the sustainability of decisions. Looking at the decisions complaint managers have to make everyday it seems obvious that we need to find a way that shows us how to improve decision-making. Considering the bounded rationality of humans, the target is to show ways that consider not only first thoughts but also the side or long-term effects of actions. By this, there is a certain focus on effects people are kind of 'unable' to think of at once, such as multiple feedback loops. The approach illustrated in this paper is completely new. Though the design of complaint management has been topic of several research actions and focus of papers, nobody applied dynamic patterns particularly to this context until now. Current and past research often focused on what went wrong and how you could improve, but that kind of approach does not meet the needs of managers who want to know and understand why the decision they made eventually turned out to fail. The application of known patterns shall help to build a comprehensive understanding for the decision-making in the context of complaint management.
